Dear Friends and Family,

I hope you’re doing well and that your life is full of amazing opportunities and experiences everyday. This past year has been the most intense of my life; I have had 15 surgeries in the last year and have come very close to not surviving. I have had more difficulties and pain than I ever thought possible, but I have also had more joy and love than I ever thought possible. I have created more possibilities everyday and the possibilities continue to grow and multiply. I’m writing this in the hospital as I await my 40th surgery in 10 years. Tomorrow I will have an implantable valve placed in my brain that will have a tube attached to it that empties into the atrium of my heart, draining excess cerebrospinal fluid that is building up and compressing my brain.

Through dealing with my own medical struggle I decided that I wanted to create something from that which would help other people. What was created by an incredible and powerful group of my friends and family is a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable foundation called JoannaCare. JoannaCare’s vision (and already its action) is to provide both financial and emotional support for people dealing with extreme medical situations who either don’t have insurance at all or their medical expenses are so great that even with insurance the financial situation of the family is catastrophic.

JoannaCare has been in existence for less than two months and we have already raised thousands of dollars through personal and business donations. Our first fundraiser was a screening of the documentary that Dr. Neil Shulman and Associates made about my life and medical situation. You may have heard of Dr. Shulman via the movie made in the 80’s starring Michael J. Fox entitled Doc Hollywood; Neil Shulman was the writer of the book the movie is based on, and also a producer of the film.

JoannaCare has a goal of raising $100,000 in the year 2010, and we have a long way to go to get there, but I know we can do it. We have our biggest event so far that is being held on Thursday evening, November 4th from 6:30-10:30 PM. The JoannaCare Gala will include dinner, live music, and both a silent and live auction. It’s going to be a lot of fun and it’s truly going to help save lives.

My sincere request is that you learn about JoannaCare and become involved if you are inspired by the movement that we are creating. Again, I would be incredibly honored if you would try and make it to the Gala. And if you are able to take on the request and commitment, please share about JoannaCare and encourage as many people as you can to come on November 4th. Support of any level has an amazing impact, which means that you individually can and will make a difference. I would so appreciate any contribution you can make whether it be financial by coming to the Gala or any other form of contribution you are inspired to make.

I am going to include multiple links at the bottom of this message for you to look into. My request is that you carve out some time to really learn about what we are creating and to get involved in whatever way you so feel moved to. What we need more than anything right now is tickets to be sold for the November Gala. Please help us to make this evening an overwhelming victory by attending and bringing as many friends and family members with you as you can.

JoannaCare is a movement and we are committed to empowering every being we come into contact with, whether they be young or old, man or woman, rich or poor, sick or healthy–we are a stand for life, for love, and for laughter. We will save lives, we will empower them, and we will leave them with the experience of being moved and inspired. Now, my only question is, will you take our hands and stand with us?

Please let me know what you think about JoannaCare and how you would like to get involved if you feel inspired to do so. Also please let me know if you want/need any more information other than what the links contain that I listed below my signature. Thank you for taking the time to read this message, and thank you for letting me share about JoannaCare with you. Your involvement will make a difference in the organization, and most importantly in the lives of the people we are going to help when they need it most. Looking forward to hearing from you, and hoping to celebrate life, love, and laughter with you at The Gala!

With much love and gratitude,

Below are the links for the documentary which is about 80 minutes long. There is also a 10 minute trailer version, but my request is that you please watch the documentary it in its entirety so that you can really get the world of it.  The documentary can be watched without being broken into chapters by going to the first link below, but if you have any difficulty the third link takes you to YouTube where you can see the full movie, but it’s broken up into nine parts. Let me know if you would like a DVD copy of “Joanna’s Story” to host a home screening for friends, family, and/or colleagues. Thank you so much for your support.
